In honor of World Mosquito Day on August 20, I’ve rounded up a few natural ways to get rid of those pesky mosquitoes! We all have been spending more time outside not only because it’s summer, but because of social distancing. We have loved all of the patio time and BBQs… minus the bugs! Here are my top 4 natural mosquito repellants.
Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus
This comes from the leaves and twigs of the lemon eucalyptus plant. Some bug repellants lotions and sprays contain this oil and studies show it can last hours and it’s just as effective as DEET. Don’t confuse OLE with “lemon eucalyptus oil” The two names are very similar, but refer to different oils.
Peppermint Oil
Peppermint essential oil has been tested and will protect you for 150 minutes! Just be careful when applying an essential oil to your skin. Test a patch of your skin first just to be safe
Citronella and Citronellal
You probably already have candles and lotions with these plant-based oils in them but these oils mask body scents that attract mosquitos!
Botanicals
Some other plant-based products have mild repelling powers. Strong smelling leaves and herbs like rosemary are good repellants too!
