When it comes to Downtown Raleigh’s historic neighborhoods, Glenwood-Brooklyn is known for its sense of community, active neighborhood association, and showpiece homes—many of which are included in the annual Tour of Historic Homes.
Glenwood-Brooklyn occupies the blocks along both sides of the segment of Glenwood Avenue between Peace Street and Wade Avenue. The neighborhood has lots of sidewalks making it easy to enjoy everything Downtown Raleigh has to offer.
The streets of Glenwood South are lined with progressive restaurant and nightlife concepts, unique shops, art galleries, and studios, all built in what was once a row of warehouse buildings.
Fred Fletcher Park is located in the middle of the neighborhood and features a watergarden, wetland, amphitheater, shelters, a basketball court, tennis courts, a softball field, and a playground.
In 2002 the neighborhood was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Keep reading to learn a little more about the history of Glenwood-Brooklyn.
The History of Glenwood-Brooklyn
Glenwood-Brooklyn marked the beginning of the suburbanization of land north of Raleigh’s city limits, which ended at Johnson Street from 1857 to 1907. The neighborhood is often referred to as Raleigh’s first master-planned neighborhood. It was mostly built in the early 20th century and was home initially to a mix of working and middle-class families. When the first houses went up in Glenwood and Brooklyn, they were mostly Victorian-era Queen Anne style. Learn more at GlenwoodBrooklyn.org.
