Deciding between artificial grass and natural grass is something many homeowners struggle with. You want to have the perfect lawn that is great for guests, pets, and kids, year round. Real grass lawns and artificial turf lawns are both great options that have their own benefits and challenges. Let’s dive in and at the end of this post, I will tell you which one I chose.
What is Artificial Turf?
Artificial grass is composed of synthetic fibers that are made to look like natural grass and have a lifespan of up to 25 years. Artificial grass needs little to no maintenance and with new technology that has come about over the years, the synthetic turf can look and feel very similar to real grass.
There are different types of artificial turf to choose from. You can select the material, pile height, and color. Artificial turf is made of three different materials: polypropylene, polyethylene, and nylon.
Benefits of Artificial Turf
- No watering, mowing, or fertilizing
- Perfect appearance year round, regardless of the weather
- No tracking of dirt or mud with children or pets
- Similar look and feel to natural grass
- Little to no maintenance (Save cost on typical lawn care)
Natural Grass
Natural grass, when done right, can look gorgeous and many people opt to keep their lawns natural because of the cost and the fact that there is no chance it will look fake. Natural grass does require a lot of maintenance if you want to keep it looking its best year round and this can come at a high cost. Even if you do not care a lot about the look of the grass, you still have to mow it and it should be watered.
Benefits of Natural Grass
- Oxygen generation
- Improvement of soil quality
- Reduction of runoff
- Filter pollution
- Absorbs Heat

Annie’s Choice
I opted to keep natural grass in my front yard and did artificial turf in my backyard and I am so happy with my decision. I love our artificial turf and so do our dogs. My backyard gets very little sunlight so it was always muddy which means the dogs were constantly tracking the mud in the house. Now, they can enjoy the backyard and come in and out of the house as they please without making a mess. My teammate Ryan Boone saw how good my backyard looked and also decided to do artificial turf in his backyard. His son is so happy that now he can play in the backyard year round and Ryan is happy he does not have to tend to it.
