In the South, we’ve got some funny names for all sorts of things—including parts of the home! If you’ve ever been scrolling through Zillow or listening to your REALTOR® describe a house and thought, “Wait, what’s a FROG?” or “Why do I need a mudroom, exactly?”–you’re not alone. Southern homes have charm, and part of that charm is the unique names for different spaces. I’m here to help y’all decipher some of these quirky terms so the next time you’re house hunting, you’ll know exactly what you’re looking at!
The Lingo Lowdown
Mudroom
This is a small area, usually right off the entrance, where you can drop shoes, coats, and bags before you enter the main part of the house. It helps keep all that outdoor mess from trailing through your home. Think of it as a catch-all for muddy boots, backpacks, and anything else you can think of!
Butler’s Pantry
This isn’t where your butler goes to snack (though if you had one, they might!). A butler’s pantry is a small storage area or prep space between the kitchen and dining room. It’s perfect for stashing extra dishware and wine glasses or prepping meals out of sight.
Water Closet
A water closet is just a fancy (and kinda old-fashioned) way of saying a small room with just a toilet inside. It’s typically separate from the rest of the bathroom found in the primate suite, offering a little more privacy.
FROG (Finished Room Over Garage)
This space can be anything from a guest room to a home office or even a bonus play area for the kids. If you’re creative, a FROG can become one of the most versatile spots in the house!
Carport
Think of it as a garage but without walls. A carport is an open-sided structure that provides shelter for your car from the elements, without the full enclosure of a traditional garage. It’s perfect for keeping your ride cool and dry without taking up too much space.
Powder Room
The powder room may sound fancy, but it’s simply a half-bath. No shower or tub, just a toilet and a sink. It’s the perfect place for guests to freshen up or, as they used to say, “powder their nose.”
Foyer
This is the entryway to your home, where you welcome guests and hang their coats. It’s often decorated to make a great first impression and set the tone for the rest of the house.
Den
The den is your cozy living space–often a little more casual than a formal living room. It’s where you gather with family to relax, watch TV, or just hang out. Think comfy couches, family photos, and lots of cozy vibes.
Parlor
A parlor may sound old-fashioned, but some Southern homes still have one! This is a formal sitting room, often used for entertaining guests. It’s usually one of the “fancier” rooms in the house, with nice furniture and décor, meant to impress.
