What the Western Blvd. Redevelopment Means for Raleigh

We’ve driven down Western Blvd. hundreds of times—to grab food, to meet clients, or just on the way out of town—and for years, one sight stood out more than anything else: the old K-Mart building, sitting there, vacant and forgotten.

Well… not anymore.

The long-empty big-box site at 4500 Western Blvd. is getting a complete transformation with CityPlat—and what’s planned is exactly the kind of development we love to see in Raleigh.

Keep reading to learn about some of our favorite highlights and check out this article on WRAL for more.

A Once-Empty Landmark, Now a New Hub

For nearly a decade, that spot was one of the most visible eyesores in West Raleigh. The kind of thing you’d drive past a hundred times and hardly notice—until you did. But now, developers are breathing real life back into the space, converting the old K-Mart into a vibrant mixed-use hub full of activity.

What’s coming? A lineup of tenants that truly speaks to community:

  • A Gold’s Gym with tens of thousands of square feet of fitness space
  • A basketball training facility that’s perfect for families and athletes
  • Entertainment venues like 810 Billiards & Bowling
  • Food and café spots like Vavela Café
  • Apparel from Mythic Golf
…and more that will open through 2026.

It’s not just leftovers from an old retail store—it’s a place people will want to go, stay, and enjoy.

Why This Matters to Raleigh

So why are we excited about this development? Because this is exactly the kind of community-forward growth that helps shape the city for the better.

1. It brings new energy to the neighborhood.
That stretch of Western Blvd. has always been important for connecting Raleigh to the rest of the region—but for a long time, it felt like one foot was stuck in the past. This project changes the narrative.

2. It’s more than retail—it’s entertainment, fitness, and lifestyle.
People are tired of under-utilized spaces that sit empty. This reimagined site gives folks somewhere to gather, play, work out, grab a bite, and spend time with family.

3. It signals real opportunity for the whole area.
There’s already talk about expanding development around the site, including proposals that could bring thousands of new residential units to the surrounding blocks. That means new neighbors, new foot traffic, new opportunities, and more community vibrancy overall.

A Vision That Keeps Growing

What’s especially exciting is that this isn’t just a one-and-done renovation. City planners and developers are thinking big. The current zoning allows for buildings up to seven stories, and there’s movement toward even taller, mixed-use possibilities—including residential components that could bring thousands of homes to the area.

That’s the kind of forward-thinking growth that can turn a single project into a real neighborhood anchor—one that doesn’t just change a block, but helps shape an entire corridor.

What We’re Looking Forward To

We’re especially excited about the fact that this transformation isn’t just about a building—it’s about putting people first. Whether you work out, meet friends, live nearby, want to live there, or are just looking for an excuse to explore a part of Raleigh you haven’t visited in a while, this redevelopment is going to offer new reasons to love Western Blvd.

It’s the kind of progress that makes us feel optimistic about Raleigh’s future—a city that remembers its roots but doesn’t hesitate to build toward something bigger. And honestly? That’s the Raleigh we want to share with every client, neighbor, and friend.

Here’s to new life on Western Blvd.—we can’t wait to see it all come together in 2026.
